I've been looking for a different spelling of the name, since in my household, the family lore was that the name spelling was changed, by a direct ancestor. My Dad said that the ancestor was a "judge in New York".
As for the Ghastine that you refer to, anything is possible, but there are records up until the very early 19th century with the spelling as Ghastin, so it would be unlikely
