James Ghastin was awarded a Bounty Land Warrant for his participation in the War of 1812.
This record is in the National Archives, on Microfilm M848, Warrant Number 2724 9

We'd love to have an image of the page from this index, to make it official! So if anyone lives near one of the National Archives branches, and wants to give it a shot, let us know! Nearest one to me is about 8 hours away.

I believe that there may be an image of this index on Ancestry, if anyone is a member...

(2) Samuel Wing around 1858, Ashtabula Co., OH; m. (3?) Bixby?; m. (3) Lucius Garfield, August 10, 1870, Gilmore, Benzie Co., MI; m. (4) Joshua Vaughn, July 28, 1883 Benzie Co., MI; d. September 25, 1888, Blaine Twp., Benzie Co., MI; place of burial unknown.

Sarah was named after her mother.

She married William Riley Ghastin (b. around 1828, PA). They were living next door to Sarah's brother Ephraim Powers in 1850, Richmond, Ashtabula County, Ohio. Together, they had several children, including their first, Emma, born in May, 1850. They divorced, however, in 1856, the same year their last daughter Lavancha was born. Their children were split up and sent off to different families in the area.

I understand from what is posted at this site that William Riley and Sarah Powers Ghastin had six children. I only have five children for them: Emma J., Marquis Roswell, Rosetta, William Louis, and Lavancha. Who would the sixth child have been?

I am descended from Samuel Wing, second husband of Sarah Powers Ghastin. I am also trying to contact Judith Ghastin, who posted at the Wing Family of America site that she was looking for proof of Sarah's marriage to Samuel Wing.

The ghastine member i know went from Italy to Argentina arround the early 1900s.

So could there be any connection between United States Ghastin and italian Ghastine ?

Ghastin Family in New York

The earliest records seem to suggest that the Ghastin family migrated west from New York State in the early 19th century, but as of yet we haven't found any New York census records or hard evidence of this. The best we have are newer census records that have NY listed as the place of birth for James Ghastin. If you run across any evidence, please email it to me and I will happily post it on the site.

Ghastin's in Ashtabula Co. Ohio

Another lead that could use some followup is the 1850 Federal census from Ashtabula County Ohio. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohashtab/1850AshtabulaCensusG.htm

The below entries are found in the census. These townships (Pierpont, Richmond) are directly across the Pennsylvania border from Crawford County, which is where an1840 census record http://www.ghastin.com/images/history/1840censusCrawford.jpg shows 2 James Ghastin's, one aged between 50-60 with 4 other members of his household (1- 5 to 10yrs old , 2- 10 to 15, 1- 20 to 30, the other James is aged 20-30, and could be the same one in this Ashtabula Ohio Federal Census from 1850. Here are the records, with maps below.

Philander the last child that we know was born 1809/10 in Jefferson County NY. He came to Ashtabula county, Ohio with the family. He married Esther Ann Howard. We do not know when he died, but he never left Ashtabula County, Ohio (Conneaut) William and ? also had two more females, but we do not know their names. One was born in 1794 and the other 1802. We suspect that the unknown female born in 1794 was named Nancy and married James Ghastin. We have an article that her son Joseph was a cousin to Abner Pettey, who was the first born son of John and Huldah Macomber Pettey.
